A Noobs guide to registering for the ACM ICPC.

The ACM ICPC Season is here!

For those of you who don't know, ICPC stands for the International Collegiate Programming Contest. (ACM stands for Association for Computing Machinery)
If you show your talent here, companies are head-over-heels over you. Because it's the greatest programming contest of this universe!

This post was written by Darshit Patel.

This is a no holds barred guide to registering for the ACM ICPC 2015.
This steps were quite confusing for us too. So, I thought of explaining these to you all.

Firstly, keep in mind that the preliminary rounds are conducted by three centres in India-- Amritapuri, ABV-IIITM Gwalior, and IIT Kharagpur.
Of these, the Amritapuri contest has already been completed, and the registrations for IIT Kharagpur are closed. What remains is the ABV-IIITM Gwalior contest.

For this guide,
#define ABV-IIITM_Gwalior AITG

The deadline for the AITG contest is 25th October, 2014.

What to do?

Step 0: Convince yourself to participate in this contest.

Step 1: Register yourself on the ICPC website.

  1. Go to www.icpc.baylor.edu, and on the top right corner click on the "Register" button.
  2. Register yourself as a Contestant. For the purpose of this guide, let me create a user called 'temp'.
    Fill only the starred fields.
  3. It asks to fill in some other details. Just when you click on 'Next', oh, there's more...
  4. Then you stumble upon an awkward screen.
  5. Click the link on the large yellow exclamation mark.
  6. Oh. Another Awkward screen. Click on 'Main Information' tab. If you've completely filled the registration form (which you probably did), click on the 'Edit', click on 'Save' and then click 'View'. Do the same for the 'Contact Information Tab'.
1/4th of the difficult part is done.

Step 2: Make a Team.

All the people in a team should have registered on the ICPC website as the above steps suggest.
You should have 3 members in your team. You can also have one extra member, called a reserve, that can take anyone of your's place in case you are unwell or sick.
Now the hardest part of them all- picking a team name. (You'll soon know what I mean. :p )
After picking a team name, mail the details of your
  • Team Name
  • Names
  • E-mail Id's
  • Contest Name (In this case, ABV-IIITM Gwalior)
to any of the following people: (Please be polite ;) )

Raj Negi: thecodersblock@gmail.com
Nishant Pai: eiglesias914@gmail.com
Sumit Kumar: ksumit72.sk@gmail.com
Darshit Patel: darshit12@yahoo.co.in
(Please contact us after 17th October, 2014 only)

Step 3: The Final Step.

As soon as you receive the reply of your team being registered, log into the account you just created above.

  • Go to your "Profile". (Link on the Top Right corner)
  • Click "References". (Link on the Right)
  • Click on "People with access to your profile". Click "Accept". (In front of the Faculty Name)
Now, I have two kinds of news, good and bad. What do you want me to start with? Ignoring your opinion, I start with the bad news.

The bad news is you need to pay Rs.3000 for the contest.
The good news is that if you do not clear the first round, they refund you Rs. 2500 back.
This Rs. 3000 is for the Team as a whole, and not individually. So, for the first round, all it takes is individually Rs. 500/3=166.666667. How you divide them is up to you. :p

Unfortunately again, you have to pay it by Demand Draft, drawn in favor of "ACM Kanpur" payable at Kanpur, India. Note the DD Number (Needed for the next steps).
Sadly there's no option of paying by Net Banking/Credit/Debit Cards. DD is all there is.
Now go here, http://www.icpcgwalior.org/registration.php. Fill it with all the Registration details as you filled up on the ICPC website. Coach Details will be provided by any of the people you've contacted to in Step 2.
The Next Section where you'll need some help is the RTGS Details. RTGS stands for Real Time Gross Settlement. Not going into details(because I don't know them myself), it is used to refund your ₹2500 in case you fail to qualify for the next round. Next you need is the Bank's IFSC code. IFSC stands for Indian Financial System Code. You can search for it here - http://bankifsccode.com/.

After filling this form, get its print out. Mention the Team Name and Address for Correspondence on the backside of the Demand Draft. Send it by a Courier or Speed Post.
Send it to
Prof. Phalguni Gupta, Regional Contest Director, ACM ICPC, Asia Region- Gwalior Site,Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Kanpur, (U.P.) 208 016 INDIA

Done! Easy, isn't it?

P.S. Raj will soon be writing a post on how to prepare for it. Prepare hard!
P.P.S I've tried to make this guide exhausting. In case I've missed something, apologies.
